Hello Lovelies… I’m sitting here in the big comfy brown chair looking out the window as I write this… and my cat caught a humming bird and slinked off with her prize…. that’s how we are starting this post LOL.
My daughter and I have moved back home to my parent’s house in July and, truly, it has been such a blessing. I love the life we are living here. Working at the farm has made me appreciate spending my days with my daughter so much more! I absolutely thrive on taking care of others, so serving my parents has brought me so much joy. However… I have allowed myself to slip into some bad habits or just forget some of my good habits. I have to set a good example for everyone around me, especially my daughter. This month, I’ve picked 5 small habits to focus on be the mother, daughter, and Christian that I want to be.
1. Getting in God’s Word
There are 2 things that I have never felt like I did enough of: praying and reading my bible. This month I’m going to focus on making sure I set aside time and put effort into bible reading activities.
Most mornings, my mom is in the living room reading her bible. If my daughter and I come hang out, she will read out loud to us, which I just love. It’s useful and practical because we all need to read the bible and hear the bible. It also builds precious memories which I love! I hope my daughter grows up and remembers mornings snuggling with mommy in front of the fireplace while Granny reads the bible to us.
Something else that I really enjoy is copying scripture. I just love to write in general. And copying scripture makes me acknowledge every single word in the chapter. Then while I’m writing each word, my mind has time to consider what I’m reading. Every morning, I take my loose leaf notebook paper and copy down a chapter of Proverbs, Psalms, and, if I have time, I’m working my way through Genesis, too. I also have a pad of sticky notes that I write questions on so I remember to ask my pastor next time I get the chance.
When I used my phone daily, I used the Alexander Scourby app to read the bible to me while I was working. We are also working on memory verses.
Right now we are working on Mark 12:30-31. Look it up. It’s really been on my heart lately.
2. Chores
I actually love doing chores. I know that seems like a lie, but there is just something so satisfying about doing chores. Chores are a way to take care of the home and my family. Taking care of people brings me joy.
This month I want to get my daughter’s chores established. For me that means making a habit of helping her enjoy doing her chores and setting the example when I do my own chores. I started her a cutie little chore chart that she gets to put stickers on (it made me want to make myself a chore chart. I think I’m going to lol) and at the end of the week, if she’s done all of her chores, she gets a honey stick. So far, she’s doing really well and loving it.
I also want to make a habit of going to bed with all of my chores done. I do not enjoy waking up to a mess I’ve left for myself. Especially on days that I have to rush through cleaning up because my niece is coming for homeschool. I plan on only going to bed after the house is clean and not any sooner. I’ll start that tomorrow…
3. Only Take Sugar in My Coffee
I just want to cut back on my sugar consumption. It’s just not good for us and I am addicted! No more coke, no more sweets. BUT… coffee. I’ll allow myself to have it in my coffee and that’s it. Coffee is a comfort and some mornings, it is my only motivation to get up and get going.
This one is kind of a bummer because I love to bake! That’ not true. I actually don’t love to bake. My family enjoys the treats when I bake which brings me happiness. Therefore I love to bake… but that’s okay though. First break my sugar addiction. Then I maybe bake on the weekends or something? I’ll figure it out.
4. Drink My Water
I used to literally only drink water. Now… I drink cokes and not enough water and coffee, of course. We all know how important it is to drink lots of water. I won’t waste your time by rambling on about it lol.
5. Sit as Little as Possible
I so often find myself spending most of the day sitting. It’s easy to do when you don’t leave the house. Between all the daily chores and making an effort to stand more, I think that should burn plenty of calories, right? That’s what I’m telling myself. Once the fall weather comes, I really want to spend more time outside. But right now, it’s just been too hot for me. The sun really gets to me. So, for now, I shall stand. I can stand instead of sit when I fold laundry, I can stand while we are doing homeschool, and I can put my laptop on the kitchen island and stand while I work on it. I also need to stretch more but that will be a habit for another month!
I think I’ll create a habit tracker and share how I did when I choose my habits to focus on next month. I’d love to hear what habits you’re working on, why you’re working on them, and how you plan to establish them. Leave me a comment or shoot me an email at [email protected].
Until next time!
xoxo,
